Top tips for turning your stash into cash

Hosting a sale on the trail? We’ve got you. Use these simple moves to pull a crowd, sell heaps, and have a cracking day.

Make a day of it

Invite mates, pop on a playlist and get dressed up. Your neighbours will be having a sticky beak, so flaunt what you’ve got. You’ll make some lasting connections and shift your stuff.

Price to clear

  • Everyday items: price low so they fly.
  • Special pieces: price higher and be ready to haggle.
  • Speed boosts: final-hour price drop or a “free to a good home” table.
  • Not sure on price? Do a quick “sold items” search on marketplaces like eBay to check realistic values and whether it’s better to sell at your sale or list online.

For more pricing tips, check out the advice from super seller Nicola Bates.

Location, location, location

Busy street + easy parking = more shoppers. If your place isn’t ideal, borrow a mate’s driveway or search for markets you can join over the Garage Sale Trail weekends.

Go nuts with signage

Big, bold, bright. Put signs on main roads, near cafés and along footpaths with clear arrows, adding the date, time and address.

And remember to take signs down afterwards (or face the wrath of Margaret from number 22).

Short on time? Grab the ready-made posters and letterbox slips we provide when you register.

Tell people you're involved

  • List your sale free on the Garage Sale Trail site.
  • Share on socials; tag @GarageSaleTrail and use #garagesaletrail so we can boost it.
  • Use the social media kit provided.

Make your display pretty

Put the best stuff front and centre. Group by category or colour.

Tables and racks help - but get crafty too: fence rails, rope between trees, even the trusty Hills Hoist makes a great clothes rack.

Add tempting offers

2-for-1s, bundles, “fill a bag for $10”.

We’ve seen everything from pet baptisms to a seller singing the Collingwood theme tune with every purchase. Lean into the fun.

Try a lucky dip

Wrap small bits in paper or fabric. $5 for one / $10 for three. It clears slow-movers and keeps kids (and adults) buzzing.

Offer cashless opotions

More and more people don’t carry cash. Accept payment by PayPal QR codes or direct bank transfer so nobody walks away from a great find.

Add some extra you

Reflect yourself in your sale. Green thumbed? Offer gardening tips with every purchase. Love Dolly Parton? Get your best country outfit on and get ‘em down to your Dollywood sale.

Your vibe = your advantage.
