Shed Happens: Time to Tidy It Up!
Garages and sheds are some of the hardest-working (and most forgotten) storage zones in our homes. And for some (us included) it's the place where forgotten treasures go to hibernate.
For Week 4 of the Great Aussie Clear Out, we’re heading into the shed, garage and other hidden storage nooks to declutter the gear you’ve outgrown or don’t use.

22. Tackle the tools
How many screwdrivers does one household need? Start by gathering your tools in one place. Sort out duplicates, rusty items or things you haven’t touched in years. Keep the essentials and donate the rest to a Men’s Shed or community tool library or sell them on the Garage Sale Trail 😉
23. Look out old paint and cleaning products
Old tins of paint and half-used cleaning sprays can clutter up your storage fast. Check expiry dates and set aside anything you’re no longer using. If you’re in NSW, visit cleanout.com.au to find a Community Recycling Centre or Household Chemical CleanOut near you or check your council’s website for local services.
24. Clear out under the laundry or bathroom sink
These spots are often a jumble of mystery bottles, worn-out brushes and leaky sprays. Pull everything out, wipe down the space and only return what you use. Group similar items together to make future finds easier.
25. Check backpacks, suitcases or storage tubs
Storage tubs and travel bags can become sneaky hiding spots for random clutter. Open them up and see what’s inside - you might find forgotten gear or clothes you meant to donate. Declutter, clean and repack only what you want to keep.
26. Set aside any pet items you no longer use
Pets outgrow things too! Gather up old collars, beds, bowls or toys. If they’re in good condition, pass them on via local Buy Swap Sell groups or animal rescue organisations.
27. Bag up unused towels
Spare towels can come in handy - but there’s a limit to how many you can actually use. Set aside those you aren’t reaching for and consider donating them to an animal shelter, where they’ll be gratefully received for bedding and bath time.
28. Do a 5-minute bin declutter
Do a quick check of what’s heading into your rubbish or recycling bins. Could anything be reused, repurposed, donated or sold? A quick rescue might save something useful from going to landfill.
Rehoming Options:
Once you’ve decluttered, here’s how to give your stuff a second lease on life:
- Host a garage sale on 8-9 or 15-16 November as part of Garage Sale Trail.
- Donate usable tools to Men’s Sheds or tool libraries.
- Sell bikes, camping gear and power tools on Facebook Marketplace.
- Pass on sports gear to local clubs.
- Book a council collection for end-of-life and broken items, checking your local council’s website for the services available locally and booking ahead of time.
- Safely dispose of chemicals, batteries and paint. If you’re in NSW, visit cleanout.com.au to find a Community Recycling Centre or Household Chemical CleanOut near you or check your council’s website for local services.
