We got in touch with Editor of Houzz, Vanessa Walker, about her role and what she is most excited about for this year's Garage Sale Trail.

WHY ARE YOU EXCITED TO BE A GARAGE SALE TRAIL AMBASSADOR?

Garage sales tick all the boxes for me. They're sustainable, affordable and exciting. In short, guilt-free shopping. Plus, I suffer from the delusion that I will discover a rare and invaluable piece that everyone else has overlooked.

HOW CAN WE BE MORE CONSCIOUS CONSUMERS OF FASHION?

For a start look into the effects of fast fashion; it’s detrimental to people and the environment. The flow-on effect of informing yourself about the effects of fast fashion is likely to see you turn to recycled clothes, including those found at garage sales, or going to clothes swaps. Alternatively, if you’re after something new, there are lots of apps that tell you instantly if a fashion brand you are thinking of buying from is ethical, including Good on You.

WHAT’S THE BEST THING YOU’VE EVER BOUGHT AT A GARAGE SALE?

A beautiful vintage speckled-pottery bowl. I still love it with every fibre of my being.

WHAT’S THE CRAZIEST THING YOU’VE EVER SEEN FOR SALE AT A GARAGE SALE?

A half-eaten box of pizza. Go figure.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM GARAGE SALE FIND?

Where to start? An original Thonet chair, an Eames sideboard… basically anything by one of the admired mid-century designers.

WHO WOULD BE IN YOUR DREAM GARAGE BAND?

I would be thrilled if I stumbled across The Breeders.

WHAT’S THE MOST TREASURED POSSESSION IN YOUR GARAGE?

WHOSE SECOND-HAND SHOES WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO WALK IN?

The Dalai Lama’s.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST TIP FOR ‘GARAGE SALE ETIQUETTE?’

If you sense you are reaching for something at the same time as another person, step back and let them have it. It feels better.
