What’s your name and where are you from ?

Why are you excited to be a Garage Sale Trail ambassador ?

As a zero waster I love that items are saved from landfill by finding them a new home or a new purpose. I also love that this event is about community, creativity, thriftiness, and the thrill of the hunt. All my favourite things rolled up into one big fun day!

What’s the best thing about garage sales?

For me, it’s the possibility of finding unique package-free items from past decades that can help me generate less waste, for example a glass butter dish or stainless steel safety razor.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever bought at a garage sale?

Old fashioned binoculars made from leather, metal and glass. Also an old flower press made from wood and metal. They’re beautiful objects that make me daydream about how they were used in the past.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen for sale at a garage sale?

Well, I had a wooden wine barrel that had rotted away and all that was left was the flat metal rings than held it together. They were one of the first things I sold at a garage sale and the guy was so happy to find them – just what he was looking for. The moral of the story is that nothing is too crazy to sell at a garage sale, somebody wants your unwanted stuff.

What would be your dream garage sale find?

Fowlers Vacola preserving jars and equipment in good condition. They’ve been around since 1915 during the Depression years, are Australian made and owned, and have a low environmental footprint. The system is still widely used today and is the perfect example of the robustness of reusable items from the past. I’ve been on the hunt for these for years!

Who would be in your dream garage band ?

I’m happy to listen to local talents enjoying themselves.

What’s the most treasured possession in your garage?

The BBQ. We enjoy cooking and eating outside on Summer evenings with friends and family.

Whose second-hand shoes would you most like to walk in?

David Attenborough. What a life he has had! As a child, his documentaries inspired me to pursue an environmental career.

What’s your best tip for ‘garage sale etiquette?’

If you don’t want something anymore, don’t get caught up in selling it for what you think it’s really worth. It’s only worth what someone will pay for it, and it’s much more fun to see that item go to someone who wants it rather than have it clutter up your home.

What’s your top sustainability tip?

Don’t use disposable items, especially plastic ones!
