Rebecca Mezzina from Clear Space, Garage Sale Trail Ambassador

We sat down and asked the amazing Declutter Expert, Rebecca Mezzino from Clear Space, about her role as an ambassador for Garage Sale Trail

Rebecca Mezzino

Why are you excited to be a Garage Sale Trail ambassador?

I love the idea of the Garage Sale Trail as a way for people to clear the clutter from their lives. To let go and start living a simpler life.

What’s the best thing about garage sales?

For me, getting rid of stuff! But I also love the interaction you get with the local community.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever bought at a garage sale?

I don’t usually buy from Garage Sales as a rule – I use them to declutter rather than acquire. I did pick up a Star Wars themed game of Monopoly once – that was a win!

What would be your dream garage sale find?

Well this October I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for some retro stuff. We’ve just redecorated with a 60’s theme so my dream find would be a working 1960’s sunburst wall clock in teak.

If you could convert your garage into anything at all, what would it be?

Probably a gymnastics studio for my kids to jump around and tumble with plenty of room.

Whose second hand shoes would you most like to walk in?

Literally – any 40’s fashion icon! Figuratively, I’d find it hard to choose between someone doing amazing thing for people in need, and someone obscenely rich and famous just to see what it’s like!

What’s your best tip for ‘garage sale etiquette?’

Make it more about the people than the price. Be generous, both as a buyer and a seller.

Also, to avoid cluttering up your home, have a list of things you want to get and try to stick to it.

What’s your top sustainability tip?

Buy wisely. Pay a little extra to purchase things that are either produced sustainably, are second-hand or are very high quality (and made with recyclable materials) so they won’t need to be thrown away for a very long time.
