We got in touch with the Men's Shed Association Executive Officer, David, who shares his experience with garage sales and what they are looking forward to most this Garage Sale Trail.
Why is Men's Shed excited to be involved in Garage Sale Trail this year?
There are some great synergies between Men’s Sheds and Garage Sale Trail. Men’s Sheds are in many ways collectors of everything useful, or, as typical of blokes, what may be useful one day... and this often leads to sheds being over abundant with useful items.
Through participation in Garage Sale Trail, Men’s Sheds have the opportunity to recycle and repurpose these items through to the community, and at the same time it is a great opportunity for the “shedders” to interact with their local community. There is a great deal of opportunity here to continually develop Men’s Shed participation in this event.
What is your role at Mens Shed?
I’ve been around Men’s Sheds for 11 years now. I’ve spent most of that time (10 years), as Executive Officer of the Australian Men’s Shed Association. It’s been amazing to see the Men’s Shed concept evolve into a social phenomena that now extends around the world.
Best thing you have bought at a garage sale?
Most recently it would have to be a box of mixed Lego pieces for my son, he is a Lego nut.
Dream garage band?
There would be many but for the exercise lets bring back “Hunters and Collectors”.
Whose garage sale you'd most like to attend?
Paul McCartney. I would guess that he would have some great memorabilia from when he was in that 1960’s band with those three other blokes from Liverpool.
The Australian Men’s Shed Association will be organising sales all across Australia as part of the nationwide Garage Sale Trail on Saturday 21 & Sunday 22 October. Search for sales or find a Shed near you.
