A pre-loved item sells every 2.6 seconds on eBay. That’s a heck of a lot of reuse happening online and a lot of second-hand handbags, shoes and technology being sold every single day. As Australia’s biggest pre-loved marketplace, we asked the good folks at eBay to share their top tips so you can make the most of your items at the Garage Sale Trail, and all year long with eBay.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
Check out how much your stuff typically sells for on eBay before setting the price. You might just be surprised by what you can make. Hot tips for what sells well on eBay include ladies’ designer handbags and retro tech (think Nintendo Game Boys and vintage cameras – yes ones that use film, remember those?!).

TURN YOUR KIDS’ CLOTHES INTO A GOLDMINE BY BUNDLING ITEMS TOGETHER
One of the most surprising ways to make money on eBay is by taking a look through your kids’ drawers and cupboards.
A great technique for selling kids and baby clothes is to sell in bundles e.g. a toddler girl bundle of treasures. When listing on eBay, you'll save time as you only need to create one listing and send just the one parcel. Bundles are also a great way to sell books and DVDs.
YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT PICTURES
They’re worth a thousand words, right?
The items which sell quickest have great images that are taken in natural light on a clean, ideally white background. If the items you’re selling have any marks or signs of wear, make sure you take close-up photos of these flaws to avoid any surprises from buyers. Don’t forget to also give the item a dust before taking that winning snap!
Even if you intend to sell your item at the Garage Sale Trail, increase your selling chances by uploading great pictures on your sale profile.
GOT A MOUNTAIN OF OLD PHONES AT HOME GATHERING DUST?
As well as being a great way to make some serious cash quickly, creating a listing for your phone on eBay takes only a minute (yes, seriously) with eBay’s very clever listing and valuation tool. You’d be surprised how much your used mobile devices are worth, even if they’re not in mint condition. Holey Moley.

IF SELLING ONLINE, MAKE YOUR EBAY LISTING STAND OUT
It’s important to choose a title for your listing that grabs people’s attention. Years of selling and crunching numbers at eBay have told us that items sell quickest if they:
- Have a short title (60 – 80 characters to be exact)
- Include the brand name (check your spelling!) and size of the item if relevant
- Include the words people might use to search
